“Saint Joseph Church” located in Sagesse Street, Achrafieh was built in the 1880s as an extension to the Maronite Archdiocese of Beirut by giving it the name of Saint Joseph - the diocese’s Patron and is considered the episcopal seat of it.
This church is assumed a parish and pastoral service for the inhabitants of the district since the beginning of its existence. In 1959, the decision of adding two branches to the old church was made after being inspired by the shape of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome to form the shape of a cross having a total area of 1,150 m².
This is the current form of the church; however, it was severely damaged after the explosion that ripped Beirut Port on August 4, 2020. The parish church of Saint Joseph has stopped its spiritual services after the explosion so immediate actions were taken to restore back its function. A donation was received from A C N (Aid to the Church in Need) and an individual donor through the Maronite Archdiocese of Beirut for the rehabilitation process.
